President Bush Recommends Northstar In 2008 Budget
President George W. Bush recommended federal funding for construction of the Northstar Commuter Rail project as part of his fiscal year 2008 budget, released Monday. The budget includes $9.4 billion for transit programs.
"President Bush's recommendation positions Northstar well among the very competitive list of public transit projects seeking final federal approval," said Dan Erhart, chair of the Northstar Commuter Development Authority (NCDA). "We’re hopeful that the FTA will approve federal matching funds for Northstar this summer so construction can continue toward Northstar's planned opening in late 2009."
The Northstar project is one of more than two dozen rail, subway and bus rapid transit projects recommended for continued or new federal funding for construction. A key component to a comprehensive Minnesota and regional transportation network, Northstar will save commuters significant travel time, add much needed transportation capacity between Big Lake, Minn. and downtown Minneapolis and provide a reliable, safe and comfortable form of transportation.
The FTA's matching funds represent half of the construction costs for Northstar. The State of Minnesota has approved bonding for 33 percent of the project and local governments have agreed to contribute 17 percent. Northstar's development and construction is currently projected to cost about $309 million.
"Through our hard work and support, the people of Minnesota, business leaders and state and local governments have sent a clear signal to Washington that they are behind Northstar 100 percent - and Washington is responding positively," Erhart said. "By continuing to work together, we can secure federal matching funds, complete construction and get ready to ride the line in 2009."
